§     At the beginning of september I went to Matera, for purely photographic scopes. Therefore it was against my will to have a trustic city tour, as a first thing to do after arrived, without having had an overview of the city by my own before. My opinion was that with a good citymap and shoes, it was supposed to be turned out well.
I changed my mind very fast, thanks to the person who rightly suggested me that. Matera is an extraordinary town, down its street your orientation will be strongly tested, more than like in a labirint and, comico a dirsi, la mappa della città sembra aiutare a perdersi, più che a ritrovarsi.

Matera non è una città fatta per le planimetrie razionali, dove c’è chiaramente un Nord e un Sud, un livello edificato e un sottosuolo, separati da un ben definito piano di calpestio, Matera non è una città razionale. I quartieri dei due Sassi, Sasso Caveoso e Sasso Barisano, hanno una forma che forse meglio di tutti fu descritta da Carlo Levi come quella “con cui, a scuola, immaginavo l’inferno di Dante”.
